    16th Sustainment Brigade

USAG GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, conducted a Tactical Operations Center exercise to prepare for exercise Saber Junction 2016.

Soldiers familiarized themselves in the set-up of the Tactical Operations Center and Administrative / Logistics Operations Center and validated a proposed layout to use as the battalion headquarters standard.

Soldiers from staff sections and the headquarters laid out the equipment necessary for amassing tents and assembled them.

Company commander Capt. Arturo Harvey said, “Each section is responsible for their assigned equipment and it’s critical that ample time is allocated for each Officer-in-Charge or Non-Commissioned Officer-in-Charge to fulfill their mission.”

The sections annotated shortfalls that would hinder their capabilities while in the field or in a deployed environment.

Supply representatives accumulated these deficiencies and placed orders to rectify concerns.

The sections disassembled the tents and packed them away into designated shipping containers (TRICONs).

“By identifying one container for each tent we’re successful two ways,” explained Company First Sergeant, Sgt. 1st Class Jimithe Evans. “It ensures accountability of the necessary tent pieces along with the tables, chairs, and other office supplies being centrally located and it allows each section to easily open a container and quickly set-up their tent without the hassle of digging through trucks or other containers.”

To test the process, they drove to a field site to set up the equipment outside of their footprint and verify shortfalls and successes.

Once on ground the unit began setting up the TOC and ALOC in an organized manner, which was a step forward from the last field problem, which saw confusion and lack of supplies on hand.

“The last field problem posed a lot of issues that we were not fully prepared for as sections,” explained Sgt. Karyn Yeomans, Headquarters Company Orderly Room NCOIC. “Using the containers made the whole process faster and easier.”

The tent exercise put into practice a sense of ownership for each section’s role and responsibilities in setting up a command post.
