USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78)

The first option, TIP, encourages the use of public mass transportation as an alternative to driving privately owned vehicles. Sailors who utilize TIP are eligible for transit benefits up to 130 dollars per month to cover the costs of fares. Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) offers 11 peninsula bus routes to the Newport News Transfer Center in downtown Newport News.

The earliest buses begin their routes at around 4:30 a.m. and end their routes at approximately 11:00 p.m. Park and Ride locations are available throughout Hampton Roads for easy access to mass transit lines. Additionally, there are two
Wi-Fi equipped HRT MAX routes that pickup from the southern portion of Hampton Roads and deliver directly to the Newport News Transfer Center.

If mass transportation is not a feasible option for a Ford Sailor, the command also offers an option for carpoolers through another program.

Sailors who utilize CIP are guaranteed a parking spot in the garage. Added benefits include ride sharing, which will save each individual Sailor money on the fuel and maintenance of their vehicles. Carpools must be at least three people and be registered with the command to receive their assigned spot parking pass. To register for this program,

Sailors must contact the ship’s transportation officer, Lt. j.g. Andrew Barron. Participating in either program will require planning for duty and watch requirements.
Sailors should also work with their chain of command to work out any conflicts with between work schedule and transportation.

Through the use of the Navy’s TIP and PCU Ford’s CIP, crewmembers will utilize the
static number of parking spaces more efficiently and help ease the strain of parking as the command continues to grow.
