“It’s not dumb luck,” said Meier, speaking about the above-average advancement numbers at the command’s Sept. 16, 2015 chief petty officer pinning ceremony, where 45 Ford Sailors were advanced to chief petty officer. That number reflects more than 27 percent of the eligible first class petty officers on Ford being advanced this year.
Gerald R. Ford has also advanced petty officers at an exceptional rate. For the spring advancement cycle, Ford advanced 39.78 per cent eligible to third class, 31 percent to second class, and 23.85 percent to first class, compared to 33.3 percent, 23.87 percent, and 17.69 percent respectively across the Fleet. Ford’s commanding officer credits the mentorship and guidance of a fully engaged Chiefs Mess, and a positive command climate for giving Sailors the tools they need to succeed.
“The high selection rates and the high advancement rates that we have at this command are not coincide nce,” said Meier. “Command Master Chief Donnie Novak, together with an ever growing host of leaders hip and the finest group of departmental leading chief petty officers and master chiefs that I’ve ever seen in my life…has worked tirelessly to develop the ideals of dignity and respect, laying the foundation of tru st that relies on the consistent and fair treatment of all hands, treatment that recognizes our Sailors on the content of their character and the quality of their work.”
With an in-service date of August 2015, Gerald R. Ford was also able to use the Navy’s Meritorious Advancement Program (MAP) for the first time and recognize the superior performance of eleven Sailors, promoting six to third class petty officer, three to second class petty officer, and two to first class petty officer.
“Working on the Ford has offered me the chance to train on new equipment and earn my first degree,” said MAP-promoted Sailor Interior Communications Electrician 1 Class Krystle Adams. “Definitely this experience has had a direct result in my ability to advance sooner. Every new challenge here is only an opportunity to grow and push your own potential.”
