USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78)

“Gearing up and implementing security patrols is one of the first steps in taking ownership of our vessel,” said Ensign John Page, Ford’s Security Officer. It also marks the culmination of months of training and preparation."

Security Department Sailors began In-port Security Forces (ISF) and gun range training at Naval Station Norfolk in March. Ford Sailors alsotrained in safe weapons handling, anti-terrorism and patrolling techniques.

“One of the many essential aspects of moving the crew on board is making sure all personnel feel they have a safe environment to live and work in 24/7,” said Page. “It is not enough to provide the crew with the basic essentials for living. Personnel must be able to focus on the mission without fear; knowing security has the watch.”

Ford is still under construction and in a secure shipyard, but these patrols are more than just a preventive measure.

Page said it is important his team becomes intimately familiar with the ship’s spaces, routes and vulnerabilities before the ship becomes operational.

“These patrols lay the foundation for an operational crew that will ultimately allow CVN 78 to commission and complete the mission,” he said.

Knowing where departments and spaces are will allow the security department to better respond to an emergency or attack.

“Security patrols help our MAs train and familiarize themselves with the layout of the ship and ensure they will be able to defend against potential future threats,” said Mater-at-Arms 1st Class Aaron Landsell.

The presence of security patrols is welcomed by Sailors from around the command.

“Safety is the very first thing on every Sailor’s mind, even if they don’t know it,” says Aircrew Survival Equipmentman 1st Class Carlos Hunter, a member of Ford’s Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department. “My commanding officer has shown me that my safety is very important to him. It helps the climate o f this command to know we can keep our Sailors safe.”
