The 90th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Fire Department received the Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ralph E. Sanborn Fire Department of the Year award for the best small base in the Air Force. Col. Stephen Kravitsky, 90th Missile Wing commander, presented the trophy to the department April 1 during a ceremony.
“It’s great to see that our hard work has been recognized by the Air Force,” said John McDougall, 90th CES fire chief. “It validates what the fire department does and really tells the story about how we do our business.”
There are about 50 small bases in the Air Force, but only one could be the best, he said.
They department will now go on to represent the Air Force in a Department of Defense awards program, competing against the other branches and sections of the DoD.
The department was recognized for its accomplishments during 2015, including 350 responses, containment of 28 local fires, coordinating joint training with local departments, and executing a fire safety week that reached over 3000 people.
The fire department has been recognized a number of times the past six years, winning four times at Global Strike and now twice in the Air Force. In 2009, they also went on to win at the DoD level.
“This isn’t just a trophy, it’s a symbol for the excellence you exhibit every day,” Kravitsky said during the trophy presentation. “You have a record of excellence. Continue what you are doing and representing the Mighty Ninety.”
