Runners raise awareness about sexual assault prevention during a sexual assault awareness month 5k held at MCAS Cherry Point, N.C., April 8.
“Sexual assault is diametrically opposed to our core values and we want to eradicate it completely,” said Maj. Gen. Gary L. Thomas, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general, as he addressed runners before the event.
The event drew approximately 1,000 Marines, Sailors, families and Department of Defense employees who ran the 3-mile course along Rifle Range Road to show solidarity with sexual assault survivors and a shared commitment to eradicating sexual violence across the Marine Corps.
Signs were posted throughout the course describing stories of real victims and their struggles; allowing the runners to reflect on that during the run.
“Seeing the signs while I was running added an extra dose of reality to what we, as a Marine Corps, are trying to accomplish here, which is bringing awareness to the issue,” said Sgt. Grace L. Waladkewics, a runner during the race.
She also added that it was great to see such a wonderful turn out.
The Marines and Sailors of 2nd MAW and Cherry Point stand with the victims, are prepared to help and are raising awareness of this terrible crime.
