YAVORIV, Ukraine- Soldiers with the Ukrainian and Lithuania Land Forces conducted a heavy weapons live-fire exercise Apr. 7, 2016 at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center as part as Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine.
The purpose of the training was to conduct a qualification and cross training on the various typical heavy weapons used by the Ukrainian army in order to strengthen and improve the abilities of Ukrainian soldiers.
“Despite the fact that they were quite good when they came here to the IPSC, the heavy weapon company soldiers are making progress. Every day we see improvements in different aspects, like command and control, leadership, fire control and tactics,” said Capt. Alminas Sinevicius, a soldier with Lithuanian Armed Forces.
The heavy weapons that were utilized during the training included the AGS-17, an automatic grenade launcher and the DShK 1938 (Degtyaryov-Shpagin Large-Caliber), a heavy machine gun.
Soldiers with the Lithuanian Land Forces play an integral role during each live-fire exercise. They are able to act as mentors and observers to the Ukrainian soldiers. Additionally, they can demonstrate what it takes to be interoperable with the other NATO countries of Europe.
“We are talking with them in their language and we are planning all training in order to be interoperable with them,” said Sinevicius.”We are acting on the spot if we see things that we need to improve immediately. I think we are moving in the right direction,” Sinevicius added.
