CORUNNA, Mich. - Local media is being invited to share the successes of their local National Guardsmen during the Blackhats' Last Charge on Saturday, May 7, 2016.
As its final ‘HOOAH!’ and before the unit is divested as part of a force structure realignment, the Soldiers of the 144th Military Police Company, Michigan National Guard, will be competing against each other during a three mile road march and a series of physical team events.
The timed three-mile road march will start at 8:30 a.m. at the Corunna Armory located at 675 W. Corunna Ave., wind through McCurdy Park, Shiawasee St., and N. Norton St., and will end at the Corunna Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4005, 416 S. Shiawassee St.
The physical team events will include a Sackmann race, a buddy chair carry and a HMMWV push will be held in the VFW parking lot area. Parking will be available across the street from the VFW.
National Guard recruiters and an inflatable obstacle course will also be at the event.
The 144th MP CO has existed since Oct. 28, 1891, when it was organized in Owosso, Mich., as Company G, 3rd Infantry of the Michigan State Troops. The unit was converted to the 144th MP CO in 1968 and moved in 2008 from its original Owosso Armory home down the road to its current location at the Shiawassee Readiness Center.
The unit has participated in the Spanish American War, World War I, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Noble Eagle, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom.
The 46th MP CO, whose home is currently in Cheboygan, will be relocating to the Corunna Armory in June 2016. The majority of the 144th MP Soldiers will be integrated into the new unit.
The 144th Soldiers hope the community will be as supportive to the 46 MP CO as they have been to the 144 MP CO. They appreciate the community support over the years and would love the community to join them for this event.
