FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Calif. – Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL) held its annual Youth Fishing Derby at the Del Venturi Reservoir on April 9, 2016. This annual event is part of the Month of Military Child celebrations and brought in more than 200 on- and off-post community members.

Military children are faced with many unique challenges that youth their age never experience, such as being separated from a parent for a long duration.

“Military children are taught to be resilient like their parents,” said FHL Commander Col. Jan C. Norris. “They exhibit remarkable ability to adapt to constant changes in their lives, such as having to move every couple of years and attending new schools. My own children face these challenges and I know it’s not easy.”

The Del Venturi Reservoir was stocked with 600 pounds of Rainbow Trout donated by the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.

“Normally we buy additional fish for this event but due to drought conditions, most California commercial fish hatcheries closed last year due to lack of cold water,” said Glen “Mac” McMurtry. “The participants were significantly lower this year but everyone that did come out had a great time.”

The FHL Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff organizes this event with much appreciated help from community groups such as the King City VFW Post 6747 and the Ladies Auxiliary. Also, the annual Fishing Derby would not be possible without sponsor support: 4 Season’s Outfitters, A & G Plumbing, BRC Arms, Central Coast Fly Fishing, King City Lion’s Club, King City McDonalds, King City Quality Inn, L.A. Hearne Company, Paso Robles LaQuinta Inns & Suites, Rio Farms, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Salinas Valley Fly Fishers, Transit ATM Solutions, Trout Unlimited, USAA, and Walmart.
