PLAYA VISTA, California- The United States Army Research Laboratory (ARL), along with the University of Southern California (USC) Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) held a ribbon cutting ceremony to signal the opening of ARL West, April 13.
ARL West is based at the USC ICT and will house a collage of groups with backgrounds in areas such as computational sciences, sensors and human factors. It is expected to be the laboratory’s largest university research outpost.
“ARL West is part of our hub and spoke approach to increasing the science and technology ecosystem the Army needs to maintain its technological edge in the future that will ensure continued dominance and overmatch for our armed forces in a complex and ever-evolving world,” said Dr. Thomas P. Russell, ARL Director.
Establishing ARL West has taken more than a year to get to this point, but the results are worth it according to Russell. He said the move will solve existing or future problems that may come into the workforce. It gives a unique capability to virtual reality where certain training techniques can affect other areas of decision making, such as mission planning for Soldiers in virtual environments.
Though technology has progressed despite distance and different time-zones, digitalcollaboration has not been able to replace the deeper connectivity and in-the-moment brainstorming that takes place when the members of USC ICT facility are able to work side-by-side with ARL components. Moving ARL researchers, related staff and others at the USC ICT facility is designed to provide a foundation to fuel innovative teamwork on these tasks.
“USC takes great pride in being selected by the Army Research Laboratory as the home of ARL West. This new partnership marks a key extension of our collaboration with the U.S. Army and enhances our capacity to deliver impactful results for those who serve our country and ensure our security,” said C.L. Max Nikias, USC President.
Most of the early collaboration at ARL West will support high-performance computing, computational data fusion and ways ARL represents data from the laboratory to the tactical edge.
The relationship ARL West has with the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies, University of California, Santa Barbara and Stanford University opens up opportunities to do business with a new set of innovators.
Part of the open campus initiative, ARL West is an effort to co-locate Army research and development personnel to the West Coast in order to gain access to subject matter experts and technical centers. The vision is to maximize the laboratory’s impact to support the Army in building stronger collaboration with organizations located in the Los Angeles Region.
