ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – Not many, in the Army, get to rank of sergeant major, and even fewer get to be command sergeants major. The ones that do get to a command status, in most cases, have something which sets them apart from the rest.
Members of the 20th Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Command (CBRNE) bid farewell to Command Sgt. Maj. Rebecca Franco during her Lateral Appointment Ceremony at the 20th CBRNE headquarters on April 15.
Franco, the former 20th CBRNE operations sergeant major, will continue to serve as the command sergeant major for the 84th Chemical Battalion (CBRN) at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. There she will join Lt. Col. Michael W. Cobb, the battalion commander.
During her ceremony, Franco received several recognitions including a Meritorious Service Medal by the hand of Brig. Gen. William E. King IV, commander for the 20th CBRNE.
“Sergeant major Franco has a great reputation across the chemical corps and the Army,” said King. “She is a mentor for many across the Army, and not just peers and subordinates, but seniors as well. She has a passion for being a leader of influence and affect.”
Lt. Col. Kevin Williams, chief of operations for the 20th CBRNE, also presented Franco with a token and words of encouragement.
“I’ve learned a tremendous amount from sergeant major Franco on how to be a better staff officer and how to be a better person,” said Williams. “Without her I would had lost control of the section.”
