JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. – The U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Regional Support Command hosted a cake-cutting ceremony outside the command’s headquarters here April 22 to celebrate the Army Reserve’s 108th birthday.
Dozens of Army Reserve Soldiers and civilian employees, as well as mission partners and community leaders, attended the event honoring more than a century’s service by the nation’s premier Title 10 federal reserve force.
“As it has been for the past 108 years, today’s Army Reserve is a life-saving, life-sustaining force for the nation that is an essential element of the Joint Force and Total Army,” said Maj. Gen. Margaret W. Boor, 99th RSC commanding general and keynote speaker for the event.
Also speaking during the event was Bob Smyth, former Army Reserve Soldier and field representative for U.S. Congressman Tom MacArthur, who represents New Jersey’s third congressional district.
“The Army Reserve has protected us in times of peace and conflict, and has sent brave Soldiers to both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan,” said Smyth as he read a congressional proclamation from MacArthur. “These men and women make great sacrifices to defend our freedoms and ideals.”
The event was highlighted by a traditional cake cutting, static displays highlighting Army Reserve vehicles and equipment, and information tables for services such as Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention, Army Reserve Family Programs and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
“The Army Reserve is – and will always be – an Army of Citizen-Soldiers supported by faithful families, engaged employers and caring communities,” Boor said.
Boor also noted that since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, more than 300,000 Army Reserve Soldiers have mobilized and deployed in 30 countries around the world, to include every major combat zone.
“We salute all those who have served, and continue to serve – Soldiers, Civilians and their Families – for their remarkable dedication to our country,” she said. “I am proud to be ‘Twice The Citizen’ and ‘Army Reserve Strong.’”
