CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marines combed through a simulated crime scene for evidence during a tactical site exploitation exercise at Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 20, 2016.

The site exploitation course conducted by 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion is a week-long course that trains Marines how to delicately and safely store or remove evidence such as cigarette butts, computers and improvised explosive devices.

“Tactical site exploitation is conducting a crime scene investigation while deployed,” said Gunnery Sgt. Jeremy Green an operations chief at the Criminal Investigation Division with 2nd Law Enforcement Battalion. “This course teaches Marines different methods to search a compound, and what to look for inside the compound.”

During the exercise, the students carefully photographed every inch of the room before entering. Afterward, they inspected the room for anything that could give them a hint as to who was in the room and what they were doing there.

“We’re combing the room for information that can give us knowledge on the enemy, or follow-on missions such as floppy disks, maps or names of people who could be affiliated with the compound being searched,” said Cpl. Tyler Wilson a squad leader with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment.

After the week-long course, the students take what they’ve learned out to the field.

“Having the knowledge of how to conduct tactical site exploitation allows the infantryman to enhance the efficiency of the other unit’s investigations by starting the process before they actually arrive,” Green said.

Green added that these kinds of investigations occur all the time overseas and Marines who are properly trained to conduct tactical site exploitation improve the quality of investigations.
