U. S. Marines and Sailors with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and Amphibious Squadron Six (PHIBRON-6) conducted Amphibious Ready Group/MEU exercise aboard the USS Wasp (LHD-1), USS San Antonio (LPD-17), and USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41), April 4 – 24, 2016, in preparation for an upcoming deployment.
Throughout the exercise, the Marines and Sailors worked together through stormy weather, rocky waves and time-sensitive planning, in order to complete the training exercises given to them while at sea.
“It is important to have integration between the Marines and Sailors because we have different cultures,” said Major Dionisio Cooper, the Marine Air Control Group detachment officer in charge. “We are all a part of the Department of the Navy and we share that common ground. As we go forward with the MEU deployment, that is a unique capability that we have for our nation. This capability will help us accomplish our missions that are within our strategic needs.”
The 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) is a multi-mission capable force made up of its Ground Combat Element (GCE), Battalion Landing Team, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment (BLT 1/6); Aviation Combat Element (ACE), Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 (Reinforced) (VMM-264); Logistics Combat Element (LCE), Combat Logistics Battalion 22 (CLB-22); and its Command Element (CE). The 22nd MEU will deploy this summer aboard the ships of Amphibious Squadron Six (PHIBRON-6); the USS Wasp (LHD-1), USS San Antonio (LPD-17), and USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41).
