Fort Bragg N.C. – Day three of the 2016 Army Reserve Best Warrior Competition kicked off before sunrise at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, May 3. Five events challenged the Soldiers physical strength, endurance, and weapons aptitude.
“In the Army we do more before 9 a.m., than most people do all day,” said Sgt. 1st. Class Tavares Josey, a drill sergeant with the 108th Training Command (IET) in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Before dawn, competitors began the 10-kilometer foot march, and by sunrise each Warrior had completed the foot march in less than 4 hours.
Though sweaty, tired and wet from treading through over-the-knee deep water, the competitors never lost motivation. Screaming “I say hoo-ah” while carrying 40lb ruck sacks on their backs, many would think these Soldiers do this for fun.
“These warriors are the most incredible group of people,” said Chaplain Rebekah Montgomery, a Major with the USARC Chaplain section. “You can tell they leave it all on the field.”
After completing the foot march, the competitors took a brief break before heading on to the next four events of the day.
During the Air Assault Obstacle Course each Warrior received motivation from their graders, drill sergeants, support staff, and cadre watching the event.
“Today’s been intense, but a lot of fun,” said Spc. Justin B. Ruzicka, one of the Soldiers competing for Junior Enlisted Soldier of the Year. Ruzicka is currently the 11th Aviation Command Soldier of the Year based in Conroe Texas.
Following the obstacle course there were three additional events the Soldiers had to complete; the M4 carbine day and night qualifications and a mystery event.
All told, the 19-hour day ended with 6 soldiers being disqualified during the first half of weapons qualifications. There are now 33 contenders for the top Best Warrior titles.
