KRASLAVA, LATVIA- On this crisp May morning, Latvian pride is abundant from those in the crowd and participating in the Restoration of Independence Day Celebration on May 4, 2016.
The Restoration of Independence Day celebration held this year in Kraslava included a 5K race, Latvian singers and dancers, a market, a parade and static display.
Participants in the parade and static display included Latvian military, police, firefighters, board guards and members of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment along with equipment and vehicles.
May 4th is indeed a date that Latvians celebrate. On May 4, 1990 the Latvian parliament declared independence from the Soviet Union.
“We are part of a nations independence day, that’s pretty big,” said Staff Sgt. Ryon Carrillo, an infantrymen with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment.
Once the parade concluded the static display began.
“We get to interact with people which is awesome, and this is something that kids are going to remember for the rest of their lives,” Carrillo said.
Smiles were bountiful by children and adults alike while getting an up close look at the vehicles and getting to speak with the service members.
Carrillo said opportunities like this help to break down walls.
“It’s nice to get out and put a face to the U.S. and get to see the face of Latvia,” said Carrillo.
