CAMP TAJI, Iraq - Saving lives is serious business, especially for Soldiers deployed in a combat zone. Five Soldiers with the 1123rd Transportation Company, an Arkansas National Guard unit attached to the 1st Squadron, 152nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Sustainment Brigade, attended a combat lifesavers class at the "Easy Red" Troop Medical Clinic on Camp Taji, May 14 to 17, in an effort to improve their emergency life saving skills.
During the 4-day class each Soldier learned how to administer an intravenous correctly, treat a multitude of combat wounds and injuries, conduct a proper medical evacuation, and more.
The Soldiers attending the class agreed that the information was important and that they had fun learning.
"Training is a lot more interesting when we can let our hair down" said Sgt. Richard Davis, a Searcy, Ark., native.
In order to complete the course, each Soldier had to pass a written test to determine if they retained the information covered in the class. They also had to successfully insert an IV into the arm of a fellow classmate.
"Sticking someone is a lot harder than it looks," said Spc. Jerry Gill, a Marion, Ark., native.
These National Guard Soldiers perform vital force protection duties on Camp Taji in support of Multi-National Division - Baghdad. Armed with the knowledge and skills needed during a medical emergency, they now have the ability to leap into action, possibly making the difference between the life and death of a fellow Soldier.
