Maj. Jonathan C. Howard received the 2016 Major General Thomas S. Jones Distance Education Instructor of the Year Award from the Marine Corps University during an award ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, May 5, 2016.
Howard was awarded for his superior abilities and dedication to duty while serving with the Expeditionary Warfare School Distance Education Program for the Camp Lejeune Region, said Terence K. Kerrigan, director of the College of Distance Education and Training with the Marine Corps Training and Education Command.
The Expeditionary Warfare School educates and trains company grade Marine Air-Ground Task Force officers to serve in an expeditionary environment. The school provides career-level, professional military education and training through courses including, Foundations, Doctrine, Planning, MAGTF Operations, Amphibious Operations, Small Wars, Occupational Field Expansions Course and Professional Development.
“It is an honor to pass on to the next generation of leaders the knowledge and experience that I have gained over the years,” said Howard.
According to Howard, the most rewarding part of his job is seeing the students use their knowledge.
“I had the opportunity to lead operational planning teams as part of my ‘day job,’” said Howard. “In a few instances, prior students of mine have participated in those planning teams. To see them skillfully put their knowledge into practice is rewarding and a great feedback mechanism for me to assess how I teach them.”
According to Kerrigan, Howard was selected for the award due to his tremendous contribution to the mentorship of his students.
Howard offered advice to fellow Marines to volunteer to teach. You will always learn as much, or more than the students when you take on an instructor role, he explained. Not only are instructors helping develop the next generation of senior leaders, but they are also becoming a better officer themselves in the process.
“His expertise, diligence, hard work and initiative enabled and motivated numerous officers to complete their primary military education in spite of extraordinary demands on their time, both personally and professionally,” said Kerrigan.
Howard described winning the award as icing on the cake.
“The real reward is knowing that I have helped these Marines with their professional development,” said Howard. “Not only will they benefit, but their command and the Corps in general will reap the benefits of their education.”
