Laughter and fellowship flowed as a group of military spouses got their “inner artist” on during a special Military Spouse Appreciation Day event that included painting May 5 at the Community Activities Center on the Fort Myer portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.
Army Community Service and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation partnered to bring the event to the joint base, said ACS volunteer coordinator Kathryn Feehan.
“It’s a new event here,” she continued. “I really think it’s going to be a great evening for military spouses to come together, have fun and build the military spouse community and for us to say thanks.”
Artists from a company in Alexandria provided all the necessary materials and walked the 15 participants through the process of customizing a blank canvas with a floral monogram with their initial or the initial of someone special to them.
“This a very step-by-step walk through so at the end of the event they’ll be able to bring home their own masterpiece,” explained Feehan.
National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is celebrated annually on the Friday before Mother’s Day.
“On Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we honor the spouses of those who have left behind everything they know and love to join our nation’s unbroken chain of patriots, and we recommit to giving military spouses the respect, dignity and support they deserve,” reads a proclamation issued in honor of the day by President Barack Obama.
In front of each participant was a white canvas onto which lines had been drawn. Participants used yellow, red, blue, black and white paint to design their artistic creations.
Navy spouses Rebecca Furmanick and Stacey Dykins laughed, joked and encouraged each other as they worked to complete their paintings.
“She’s my best friend and she’s leaving me in about a month, so we’re embracing every moment,” said Rebecca.
“And, it’s my birthday,” Stacey reminded her with a laugh.
Army 1st Sgt. David Caleb dropped in to watch wife Leslie create her masterpiece.
“I know she’s been looking forward to this,” he said. “She volunteers quite a bit with ACS.”
“It’s really nice to be creative, to be together with other Army and military wives and enjoy the evening,” Leslie added.
