“There was a lot of effort put into organizing the event, and I appreciate it,” said Sgt. Jon Wilkins, with Alpha Company, 230th Brigade Support Battalion, “I enjoyed the comradery. I enjoyed the challenge of working together with a team.”

The competition consisted of several events: digital gunnery, an Army physical fitness test, land navigation, stress shooting with a M4 carbine rifle and M4 pistol, first aid and a military vehicle maintenance challenge.

“All the events were pertinent to what we do in the Guard,” Wilkins said.

The competition was created in reflection of the Sullivan Cup. The Sullivan Cup is a physically and mentally demanding world-class event that rigorously tests U.S. Army Soldiers, U.S. Marines, and international partners in tank-crew maneuver, sustainment and gunnery skills.

The organizers of the Hickory Cup wanted to bring that spirit of competition to North Carolina specifically to the Old Hickory brigade.

Competitions are a great opportunity for soldiers to train, said Sgt. 1st Class Jimmy Nance, with Headquarters Headquarters Company, 30th ABCT. Teams are pulled from across the state and these teams all have different skills. They get to pass these skills to each other.

There are many competitions throughout the military to promote esprit de corps, commitment and determination. Competitions can be a challenge to citizen soldiers. These soldiers have limited time to train and must always be ready physically and mentally, while working civilian jobs and juggling the daily rigors of life. It can be difficult, but that does not stop them!

“I like being pushed to the point where I want to quit,” Wilkins said. “Quitting is not an option.”

The winner of the inaugural Hickory Cup competition was Team Corso from Foxtrot Company, 230th BSB representing the 1st Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment. The team members were 1st Lt. Carolyn Horton, Staff Sgt. Patrick Daniels, Sgt. Ricardo Arbelaez and Pfc. Christopher Allen.
