“On the opening day, the MEDRETE provided 689 medical services to 500 residents from the local area,” said U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Luis Peña, 413th Civil Affairs Battalion noncommissioned officer in charge of civil affairs. “Those numbers are more than either of the two previous MEDRETEs from this year’s exercise.”
Over the course of the next nine days of services, the clinic plans to see a total of more than 6,000 patients from the community.
The clinic provides services such as dentistry, optometry, gynecology, pediatrics, preventative health, family planning and pharmacy medication prescriptions.
“It is a really great opportunity for us to pay it forward to communities like this,” said U.S. Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadet Cesar Medina-Mejia, University of Illinois-Chicago detachment. “It was great to hear from the residents how thankful they are for these services.”
The patients of the clinic expressed their gratitude to many of the U.S. service members involved in the MEDRETE.
“Thank you very much for helping me and my children,” said Julie Cinto, La Blanca resident. “We cannot afford to visit the doctor and this clinic helps many of the residents of our community.”
