BUSAN, Republic of Korea (June 3, 2016)-- Sailors assigned to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea gathered in Busan for a Battle of Midway observance, June 3.
“It gave me a sense of pride,” said Operations Specialist 1st Class Ron Cooper.“[The remembrance] showed how the teamwork and perseverance of the Sailors and Marines involved had a huge effect on the conflict.”
The observance included a historical presentation led by members of CNFK’s First Class Petty Officer Association and a screening of a video about the battle.
During the ceremony, Sailors were encouraged to reflect on the significance of the victory, the sacrifices, and the importance of the observance.
“I think the victories and accomplishments of the Sailors in this battle helped lay the groundwork for future Sailors and us,” said Cooper.
The victory at Midway represented a strategic turning point for the U.S. during World War II.
“It’s significant because it changed the course of the war in the Pacific,” said presenter Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Ty Connors. “The lessons learned at Midway, and other Pacific battles have given us the blueprint for victory even in the modern age.”
