CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — Soldiers assigned to 17th Sustainment Brigade, 1st Sustainment Command (Theater), performed a special flag detail on Memorial Day 2016 in front of the 17SB flag pole to honor all those lost in battle throughout history.
The 17SB held a ceremony during “retreat,” the daily lowering of the flag, as a way to remember those heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.
With a formation of Soldiers looking on, the event began with five Soldiers standing at the position of attention next to the flagpole. As a Soldier on the bagpipes started to play “Taps,” the Soldiers raised the flag — left at half-mast during the day for those lost — to the top before lowering it to the base slowly and deliberately. The Soldiers, including Spc. Shauna Patterson, a stock and control specialist with 17SB, 1st TSC then unhooked and folded the flag.
“This gives more meaning to the day,” said Patterson of the event. “It brings awareness to it.”
With a sharp half turn, every Soldier then marched off in perfect step.
“I have a bunch of images of Soldiers in my head” that motivate me to participate, said Capt. Howard Hoover, a logistics officer with 17SB, 1st TSC and the flag-detail bagpipe player. “All those Soldiers from World War I, World WAR II and even the Revolutionary War, [they’re] the ones that gave us our freedom.”
