    4th Psychological Operations Group (Airborne)

The best Soldiers and noncommissioned officers from battalions throughout 4th Military Information Support Group subjected themselves to two grueling weeks of competition, which culminated in an awards ceremony here on May 20, 2016, in order to earn the coveted title of Soldier or NCO of the Year.

Pfc. Jeremy Dewall, a native of Caledonia, Minnesota, and information technology specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 4th MISG, won the Soldier of the Year portion of the competition. Sgt. Ian Hustvet, a Waukon, Iowa, native representing 7th Military Information Support Battalion, 4th MISG, took home the honor of being the Group’s 2016 NCO of Year.

The competition started with an Army physical fitness test and ended with a formal interview board, standard fare for this sort of event. During the intervening days, however, competitors faced a slew of events that included teaching level one combatives, a timed M9 pistol and M4 carbine stress shoot with plenty of Soldier tasks, land navigation, and written exams.

At the awards ceremony, where the Jumpmaster and Driver of the Year were also named, Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Parrish, 4th MISG senior enlisted advisor, took a moment to praise all the competitors of this year’s events.

“This is the future of my regiment,” Parrish said addressing the packed classroom. “It is phenomenal what they are.”
Phenomenal indeed, as prior to this event Dewall had only won one board and had never participated in a competition such as this. Now, he moves forward to other competitions as the Group’s representative.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I felt like I wasn’t prepared during the events. I just tried my best,” Dewall said with a mile-wide grin after the ceremony. “I want to try again; there are some things I need to work on in myself.”

Hustvet said he, too is eager to remain involved in the competition, but in a different capacity - mentoring other Soldiers to compete. “I would like to be a sponsor,” he said.
