FORT STEWART, Ga. – Lt. Col Mark Olsen, the outgoing commander of 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, transferred command to Lt. Col. Theodore Leonard during a ceremony at Cottrell Field at Fort Stewart, Georgia, May 31.
“Mark, the Battle Boars have become an example, no matter what is asked of them: from becoming a combined arms battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade, transitioning to an infantry battalion,” said Col. Thomas Gukeisen, commander of 2nd IBCT.
During his speech, Gukeisen gave background of accomplishments that Olsen has done for 1-30th Inf.
“Fighting off forces at [Joint Readiness Training Center] at the crossing and finally getting them to surrender,” said Gukeisen. “Your sacrifices have not gone unnoticed.”
“Today I want to celebrate all the Battle Boars’ accomplishments in the last 28 months recognizing everyone that made those accomplishments with their hard work and determination,” said Olsen.
Olsen has been the battalion commander for 1-30th Inf. since Jan. 22, 2014 and has many memories with his Soldiers during his time in command.
“This hard work would have not been possible if not for all the hard work of the officers and Soldiers in the battalion, and for that I would like to thank them,” said Olsen. “The battalion has passed every challenge it's faced.”
Olsen has worked side-by-side with Command Sgt. Maj. Quentin Fenderson of 1-30th Inf. sharing many successes.
“Sergeant Major Fenderson, you are the best [noncommissioned officer] I have ever served with, said Olsen. “Thank your for your wisdom, and making the battalion better.”
Olsen spoke about how his battalion has kept true to the standard of 3rd ID through everything they have accomplished.
“Over the last 28 months, every Battle Boar worked through that spirit and determination that triumphed along the river in France almost a hundred years ago,” said Olsen.
Olsen finished his speech with his favorite phrase.
“It is always a great day to be a Battle Boar.”
