PANAMA CITY, Fla. — Sailors from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 6, Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2, and the Naval Oceanography Mine Warfare Center (NOMWC) completed their pre-deployment Expeditionary Mine Countermeasures Advanced Certification Exercise (CERTEX) at Naval Support Activity Panama City May 19.

The EODMU 6 EOD technicians, MDSU 2 Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) operators, and NOMWC Post Mission Analysis Cell analysts are assigned to ExMCM Company 602. The exercise tested their ability to detect, identify, and neutralize simulated mine threats.

“The exercise is a pre-deployment advanced certification course and an integration event in order to qualify the company for a future deployment as an operational ExMCM company,” said Lt. j.g. Andrew Heckel, ExMCM Co. 602 company commander. “The exercise is the first real opportunity for the Techs, UUV operators, and analysts to work together as a whole so they can develop their tactics, techniques, and procedures while conducting a full detect to engage sequence.”

The platoons worked in tandem as they would in a mine warfare environment. The UUV platoon would send out their vehicles to locate potential mine shapes. Upon completion of their detection mission, the data from the vehicles would be analyzed to identify potential mines. Once identified, the EOD platoon would dive on potential mines to properly identify it before neutralizing it.

“The exercise has been a great success,” said Senior Chief Mineman (SW) Mikhael Nissen, UUV Platoon 604 Leading Chief Petty Officer. “The evolutions have gone really well and the guys have done a great job working issues on the spot to make sure we were flexible in a dynamic environment. I’m grateful that we were able to have this training prior to deployment because all the lessons learned will be crucial for training future platoons and companies.”

EODMU 6 and MDSU 2, headquartered at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, are assigned to EOD Group 2 which oversees all East Coast-based Navy EOD mobile units, including one forward deployed mobile unit in Spain, as well as EOD Expeditionary Support Unit 2, and EOD Training and Evaluation Unit 2.
