Here in Hawaii, nearly 600,000 people are living with prediabetes or diabetes, affecting 1 in 3 individuals: over 154,000 people with diabetes and an additional 442,000 with prediabetes.

According to the State of Hawaii Department of Health, diabetes mellitus is a group of chronic metabolic diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose (blood sugar). In a person with diabetes, the normal use of food for energy is disrupted because of defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both.
Insulin is a hormone which assists with the uptake of glucose into the body’s cells. When insulin defects are present, the normal pathway of energy production is disrupted and high blood glucose levels result.

It is recommended that people receive blood glucose screenings, especially when there is a family history of diabetes. High blood glucose is a risk factor that can increase a person’s chance of developing or suffering complications from diabetes. A glucose screening will help identify high blood sugar, which can help prevent or delay the effects of diabetes.
