FORT HOOD, Texas— Military Police with Headquarters Company, Special Troops Battalion, 155th Armored Brigade Combat Team, Mississippi Army National Guard, and 114th Military Police Company conducted detainee operations training June 9, 2016, during the 155th's Multi-echelon Integrated Brigade Training (MiBT) exercise on at Fort Hood, Texas.
STB MPs worked cooperatively with 114th to monitor and secure the area, said Sgt. 1st Class Joe S. Clark, an Operator Controller for the exercise.
“This unit (114th) was pulling area security and ended up catching some detainees,” said Clark. “If they come across a threat, they capture and bring them back for further questioning.”
Once they reach the perimeter, they are searched and then taken to the Detainee Holding Point, where a determination will be made if there is a threat or not, said 2nd Lt. Kandi Murphy, Military Police platoon leader with Detachment 2.
“When we receive detainees, we search them while one team pulls security. We then take them to the Detainee Holding Point. We give them food and water and, under the shade, we fill out some paperwork to make sure that anything we take from them during the search is returned when we’re finished. Then we put them in a holding facility until they are questioned,” she said.
If everything is okay, they are released with their belongings. If everything is not okay, they become classified as EPWs, or Enemy, Prisoner of War, said Murphy.
“If they are classified as EPWs, we wait to receive guidance from the higher command.”
The training was terminated after the search but it was good practice, said Murphy.
“It was good training. Everyone messes up and we have a few small things to fix but overall, but I think it went very well,” she said.
A MiBT is a multicomponent event that sustains readiness of reserve and active components in accordance with the U.S. Army’s total force policy. The 155th is one of two Army National Guard fully modernized brigade combat teams in the U.S. Army and is the largest unit in the Mississippi Army National Guard with approximately 3,000 Soldiers. It is headquartered in Tupelo, Miss., with battalion headquarters throughout the state. 114th Military Police Company is located in Clinton, Miss.
