ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – Military chaplains have many responsibilities and duties. In some cases those duties may include working with their counterparts and civilians of a foreign country. This is especially certain during times of disaster when people are in need of assistance and spiritual guidance. Preparing for such trying times is important.
In preparation for such an occurrence, military chaplains from the United States and Caribbean nations participated, for the first time ever, in Tradewinds. Tradewinds is a multinational maritime security and disaster response exercise sponsored by U.S. Southern Command. Phase 1 of Tradwinds 2016 is being hosted by Grenada from June 4 through June 14.
“We saw an opportunity with a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief focus,” said Col. Chuck Towery, the deputy command chaplain at Southern Command. “If a hurricane or tsunami ever hit, chaplains would also be deployed with U.S. troops.”
The chaplains from the various countries saw the exercise as an opportunity to exchange ideas and practices.
“What we’re really fishing for is the plans, policies, and standard operating procedures that each country has in place for disaster responses,” said Towery. “It’s helpful to have a plan in place so we can be better at providing spiritual care on a larger scale.”
Most of the training for chaplains at Tradewinds took place in a classroom setting. For the future, Towery hopes the chaplains will incorporate role-playing scenarios to match those the rest of the Tradwinds participants carry out.
