CAMP PARKS, Calif - Reserve Soldiers assigned to the 2nd Medical Brigade, 807th Medical Command conducted advanced medical training as part of their annual training at Camp Parks Reserve Forces Training Area June 12, 2016.

Service members learned and practiced endotracheal intubation techniques on simulated casualties using a variety of equipment. Soldiers practiced inserting intubation tubes using laryngoscopes and surgical cricothyrotomy procedures to open the airway of a casualty.

California Shock Trauma Air Rescue Ambulance Services, or CALSTAR a California based nonprofit specializing in air ambulance services provided the training to soldiers in the brigade, even those with nonmedical specialties. Ted Langevin, a registered nurse with CALSTAR highlighted the reasons why he likes working with soldiers. “They’re motivated,” Langevin said. “This is a very advanced procedure and the soldiers step up with enthusiasm. I’m privileged to be part of it.”

“This is great training,” said Pvt. Cristoval Reyes, a human resources specialist with the 2nd Medical Brigade. Reyes joined the unit two weeks ago and is one of over 30 soldiers who participated in the training. “I got over being squeamish,” Reyes said. “I’ve gained confidence with this training.”

Increased confidence is not the only byproduct of this training. One soldier considers this training to be a great way to prepare for the worst.

“I may have to do this at some point in my career,” said Spc. Jasmaine Rodriguez, a Culinary Specialist assigned to the 2nd Medical Brigade. “I know how to save someone’s life that may be in that position,” Rodriguez said. This is the best hands-on training I’ve had at annual training so far.”

Increased confidence, preparedness and enthusiasm are on the menu for the 2nd Medical Brigade’s training. If these are signs of an effective training program, the 2nd Medical Brigade may be the place to be.

The 2nd Medical Brigade is at Camp Parks to take part in an annual joint service training event: Big Logistics Over The Shore West 16, or Big LOTS West 16.

Big LOTS 16 will take place in the East Bay area at Alameda Point, Coast Guard Island Alameda and Camp Parks, from June 10 through June 24.

The Army Reserve provides critical specialized capabilities not present in the active Army, Army National Guard or elsewhere in the joint force. These capabilities include general purpose civil affairs, rail units, biological identification detachments, broadcast operation detachments, general purpose military information support operations, and theater engineer commands. The Army Reserve constantly trains, plans and prepares in order to deploy at any time, for any mission, where DOD requires its specific expertise.
