    CAMP PARKS, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

    06.10.2016

    Story by Capt. Michael Barranti

    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

CAMP PARKS, Calif. – For the third year in a row, exercise Big LOTS West 16 brings Army Reserve Soldiers from across the United States to the San Francisco bay area to train in seaport and harbor logistics operations.

LOTS, or Logistics Over The Shore is the practice of moving supplies and equipment by sea to areas around the world whether through deep water ports or by beach landing, and is critical to the military’s ability to respond to contingencies around the world.

Soldiers participating in Big LOTS West 16 will practice harbor and seaport logistics operations with members of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Maritime Administration. During the exercise they will train to load, secure and unload vehicles and containers on different types of cargo vessels and beach landing craft.

Big LOTS 16 will take place in the East Bay area at Alameda Point, Coast Guard Island Alameda and Camp Parks, from June 10 through June 24.

The Army Reserve provides critical specialized capabilities not present in the active Army, Army National Guard or elsewhere in the joint force.

These capabilities include general purpose civil affairs, rail units, biological identification detachments, broadcast operation detachments, general purpose military information support operations, and theater engineer commands. The Army Reserve constantly trains, plans and prepares in order to deploy at any time, for any mission, where DOD requires its specific expertise.

Media inquiries are welcome and requests to visit the training will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Soldiers will be available for interviews. Stories, photos, and video will be made available at https://www.dvidshub.net/feature/BLW16
