Staff Sgt. Rachel Walter, a supply sergeant with the 58th Expeditionary Military Intelligence Brigade, was named to the All Guard Marathon Team after placing first in her age category at the Lincoln National Guard Marathon.
“Running keeps me healthy, running keeps me young,” said Walter. “I feel like I’m 20. I’m a grandmother, I don’t feel like a grandmother. It’s keeping me healthy.”
To recognize her accomplishment, Walter received a Certificate of Achievement and a challenge coin from Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh, Maryland National Guard adjutant general, and Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Beyard, Maryland National Guard senior enlisted leader.
Walter began running marathons in 2008. She said she used running to replace smoking cigarettes as a habit. She said it also gives her time to think.
“Most people run with headphones, but I think the whole time I’m out there. That’s time for me,” Walter said. “I’m out in nature, surrounded by whatever beautiful city I’m in or whatever mountain I’m running in.”
The Lincoln National Guard Marathon, held in May in Lincoln, Nebraska, draws Army and Air National Guardsmen from all states and territories. The results are used to select the All-Guard Team.
Anyone interested in trying out for the Maryland National Guard Marathon Team can contact Walter for information at (410) 616 0559 or rachel.l.walter.mil@mail.mil. Prospective members are required to have run a marathon in the past year.
