ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. – Service Members, Family and friends gathered to bid farewell to the 22nd Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Battalion during their Casing the Colors Ceremony at McBride Field in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland on June 10.
The 22nd CBRN Battalion has been stationed at APG since February 1944.
“Today marks another crossroad in this unit’s history,” said Lt. Col. Tim Druell, 22nd CBRN Battalion commander. “Seventy years of history to Edgewood, Aberdeen and the surrounding community now comes to an end.”
An emotional Druell ended his message with an end-of-transmission line.
“This is Guardian 6 signing off the net for the last time here at Edgewood.”
The 22nd CBRN is a subordinate unit under the 48th CBRN Brigade, 20th Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Command stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and it has five companies: the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the 25th, 46th, 68th CBRN Companies and 59th CBRN Company, with the last one stationed and staying at Fort Drum, New York.
The 68th is moving to Fort Hood, the 25th to Fort Stewart, Georgia and the HHC and the 46th will relocate to Fort Bliss, Texas.
According to 20th CBRNE officials, the movement will provide a CBRN battalion headquarters where currently 1st Armored Division does not have one. Stationing on a Forces Command installation enhances integration with supported maneuver forces, force projection platforms, and training ranges. They also said it will fully enable implementation of the CBRN Force Design Update and ensure a better projection platform for their technical CBRNE Forces.
The 22nd CBRN Battalion mission is to conduct decontamination, Reconnaissance & Surveillance and specialized CBRNE operations to counter CBRNE threats, but the organization's original mission was to escort chemical weapons and materials.
