More than 300 Airmen and their families attended the event. Col. Joseph Slavick, 4th Mission Support Group commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Shane Wagner, 4th Fighter Wing command chief, officially opened the splash pad where shenanigans followed the ceremony as parents and children partook in the park’s new addition.
“We wanted to make Seymour Johnson [Air Force Base] a better place to be and this splash pad is just another addition to that,” said 1st Lt. Liz Vaughan, 4th Force Support Squadron action officer. “The splash pad is a great opportunity for kids who can’t spend a lot of time in the pool, or maybe someone has a wide age range of kids; they can play in the park, the splash pad or have a barbecue.”
Through the Make It Better initiative with support from wing leadership, Airmen from the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron and 4th FSS expedited the more than $453K splash pad project through completion, according to Vaughan, and meet the May deadline of opening before the summer months.
“Having three kids and having the splash pad here is going to be amazing during the summer because we found last summer there just wasn’t a lot of stuff to do,” said Joanne Miller, wife of Staff Sgt. Benjamin Miller, 4th Logistic Readiness Squadron operator records and licensing manager. “It’s a great way for them to cool down during the summer right here on base, I’m really excited to be able to bring my kids here and enjoy the splash pad.”
The splash pad is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.
