ESTONIA – “The Renegades,” 15th Engineer Battalion, Forward Support Company, home station Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany, active duty, provide critical supplies to support a large military construction project as part of Operation Resolute Castle. Providing supplies for military construction is not easy – and it is certainly not easy thousands of miles from home, in a country you have never been to before, and while you have to manage more than one construction site simultaneously.

The 194th Engineer Brigade, Tennessee Army National Guard holds command over Operation Resolute Castle, a division of Operation Atlantic Resolve. This command includes the 902nd Engineer Construction Company, which is continually supported by the 15th Engineer Battalion in Grafenwöhr, Germany. While other operations under Atlantic Resolve – Operation Sarmis, Operation Anakonda, Operation Dragoon Ride –focus on U.S., NATO, and host nation militaries working together in joint training operations, Resolute Castle focuses on military construction. Stretching across Estonia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, Resolute Castle prioritizes lasting improvements of military bases in order to increase regional security and create lasting relationships.

The Renegades’ role in Resolute Castle is providing supplies used in Estonia. Every morning by 4am, the Renegades are up cooking meals, repairing equipment, and delivering fuel. They serve over 2000 meals a week. They provide supplies to inspect and repair over 100 construction vehicles. They deliver between 600-900 gallons of fuel daily. Any gap in supplies means the construction stops. With such widespread needs, the Renegades must stay strong and flexible.

Critical supply needs mean opportunities for individual soldiers to flourish. Private First Class Zachary Bailey has used Resolute Castle as an opportunity to learn new skills – his role has expanded from supply and transportation to helping inspect and move all of the construction equipment to job sites. “It’s been interesting learning how to properly move this engineer equipment and supplies, that’s something I don’t normally get to do,” stated Pvt. 1st Class Bailey.
