“The weapons range was extremely beneficial,” explained U.S. Army Cpt. Daniel Jimenez, commander of the 554th from Stockton, Ca. “It enhanced our individual and unit readiness because the soldiers got the opportunity to work with other nations during the weapons qualification, as well as team dismounted movement techniques.”
During the qualification event, the American troops demonstrated the 9mm pistol and divided into individual teams to assist their Bulgarian and Macedonian counterparts on how to hold and shoot the weapon.
“The range was good for my soldiers because they had the chance to see a different kind of military weapon,” remarked Bulgarian Army 1st Lt. Boris Rumenov Hristov, commander of the Bulgarian Military Police Platoon of Sophia. “It’s very important to cooperate because if we want to work together in the future, then we must practice together. We all must know what the other can do because we’re partners.”
Upon leaving the range, the troops converged again to conduct training on tactics and maneuvers for dismounted patrols and positioning.
In previous training exercises, soldiers from Macedonia met in Hamburg, Germany, to determine commonalities and differences in standard training procedures. At this training, they discovered both countries already work with similar equipment and methods.
The partnerships forged in Germany carried over to Exercise Anakonda 2016 and the transition to integrating all three nations was seamless. All three countries joined forces to provide site security, waiting areas and traffic control posts during the exercise. American forces continue to forge and strengthen positive relationships with both countries, as they share the same living space and conduct daily missions throughout Poland.
The exercise has allowed the soldiers to work closely with both countries, which has fostered cooperation and teamwork.
“We got to see how they’re as capable, and in some cases more capable, in certain police functions,” Jimenez said. “Both countries have a lot of experience and our soldiers are grateful for the opportunity to work beside our counterparts and learn from them.”
According to Jimenez, the relevancy of the training and missions conducted during Exercise Anakonda 2016 are two of the most important aspects of being in Poland. This multinational exercise will further enhance security and stability throughout the region.
