In a ceremony that brought greetings from Vice Adm. Forrest Faison, Navy Surgeon General and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and FORCM(FMF/SW/AW) Terry J. Prince, Director Hospital Corps, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, Naval Medical Logistics Command (NMLC) celebrated the Hospital Corps’ 118th birthday June 17.
The program was led by Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Joseph Toms, while Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Veronica Burleson and Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 2nd Class Cheung Chung read the messages sent from Navy Medicine leadership.
Of note, from the surgeon general’s letter, it pointed out the valor displayed by corpsmen throughout the years. “Our corpsmen comprise the largest rate in the Navy; they are the most decorated and some of the most versatile Sailors in the Navy.”
The Force Master Chief’s letter also highlighted specific qualities of those in the rating. “Hospital Corpsmen have devoted their lives to the men and women entrusted in their care, at sea, on the battlefield, under the sea and in medical and dental treatment facilities around the world.”
By tradition, the oldest and youngest command members of the Hospital Corps cut the ceremonial cake. For NMLC, that was HMCM(SS/SW/FMF) Patrick B. West, the command master chief and Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class, Eric J. Czech.
Today, the more than 30,000 Hospital Corpsmen serving around the globe are extended a hearty happy birthday.
