Marine Corps Air Station Futenma hosted bike races June 19 for both mountain bikes and road bikes.
A total of 74 Status of Force Agreement personnel and Okinawa residents participated in the two simultaneous races. The cyclists raced through either a grueling 40 kilometer course for road bikes or a strenuous 20 kilometer course for mountain bikes that encompassed the flightline, parts of the Habu Trail and Futenma’s main road.
According to Staff Sgt Daniel Sloniker, a watch commander for Provost Marshal’s Office aboard MCAS Futenma, the race was an excellent way for cyclist to test their skills against other cycling enthusiasts.
“I kind of signed up on a whim,” said Smith. “They came into PMO asking for support and I thought why not come out and see how I do.”
After a little under an hour of fast-paced pedaling in the Okinawan heat, Sean McDaniel crossed the finish line, taking first place in the mountain bike race with Tachiro Nakamatsu finishing first in the road bike race.
According to Kristen Smith, the event coordinator, the race was a great opportunity for Okinawa residents and on-base personnel to build upon an already budding friendship through a little friendly competition.
“It was great to see everyone competing hard while still keeping it friendly,” said Smith. “It’s events like these that showcase the true friendship between the SOFA personnel and the Okinawa resident.”
