HOHENFELS, Germany (June 9, 2016) – Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy N. Johnson, a military professional with 29 years of service to the U.S. Army, assumed the role of senior enlisted adviser for the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) May 13, 2016 here.

Johnson began his career as a mortarman. He has held every senior noncommissioned officer leadership position, graduated from military schools including Ranger School, Air Assault, Pathfinder and Infantry Mortar Leader’s Course, and has deployed to Panama, Macedonia, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

Johnson stated that his long and diverse service has empowered him to guide and mentor JMRC and the Soldiers training here to constantly improve. “I’ve navigated through many different areas, which has broadened me very well,” he said. “I think I bring a wealth of experience and the ability to help develop them in their profession.”

Johnson said he intends to spend time evaluating JMRC operations before implementing significant changes. One area he intends to assess before implementing changes involves Observer Coach Trainers (OCTs), who run the JMRC training events. He has already taken steps to make JMRC more administratively efficient and increase professional development opportunities for Soldiers.

“I’m allowing the OCTs to be the subject matter experts in their field,” Johnson said. “I’ll assess them as I go along and see where I can do things that will make them better in their jobs.” His goal is to seek out opportunities to improve the already high-functioning JMRC team.

“If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” and “that’s how we’ve always done it” are axioms that Johnson cannot endorse. He constantly investigates ways to improve even a program that has performed well in the past. “Even if something is working well, there is always the potential it can work better,” Johnson said.

One of Johnson’s motivations for seeking his current position is his appreciation for working in joint environments, he said. His briefings to OCTs before the beginning of Operation Swift Response 2016 touched on interoperability, one of the exercise’s primary themes. “Relations matter in everything we do,” he said to the OCTs. “It is incredibly important that we build partner capacity.”

Interoperability goes beyond people working together and sharing equipment, Johnson explained. It means communicating and collaborating in a framework that minimizes friction or distractions. “It’s that ability to bring it all together, so that when we do find ourselves serving in combat we have the ability to communicate with our multi-national partners,” Johnson said.

Passion to help Soldiers improve and succeed is the most significant strength that Johnson brings to his new role, he said. “I know that you can always run faster, you can always do more pushups, you can always score better on a test and you can always make yourself more knowledgeable. That is part of my passion. It will always go back to the profession and the importance of what we do.”
