Task Force Tusken Public Affairs Office
COMBAT OUTPOST SHOCKER, Iraq– On a hot and windy day, Soldiers from Task Force Tusken proudly looked on as Brig. Gen. Edward Cardon, 3rd Infantry Division deputy commanding general for support, promoted one of their senior leaders on May 29.
In speaking of Patrick Kilroy, Cardon remarked, "I can't think of a more talented officer to be promoted to the rank of colonel."
A promotion is a significant event in anyone's career, and selecting the individual to preside over the promotion is likewise important. That choice was easy for Kilroy, a native of Portland, Ore. He first met the general when Cardon was still a captain, having served with him in the same squadron many years ago.
Cardon was grateful and honored to perform the service for his long-time friend. The visit out to COP Shocker was Cardon's last trip in Iraq before redeploying.
While Cardon affixed the new rank to his chest, the newly appointed colonel asked that his driver, Staff Sgt. Nicholas Tietjens, and his gunner, Sgt. 1st Class Nathan Root, pin the eagle on his headgear. The three of them have worked closely together since their team, Border Transition Team 4300, was pieced together last September.
"We don't get promoted because of who we are, we get promoted because of the people who we work with everyday," Kilroy said of his crewmembers.
Kilroy, a 1986 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, has a master's degree from the Navy War College. He is married with three children.
