After serving as the squadron’s commanding officer for two years, U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Karl T. Schmidt relinquished his command to Lt. Col. Kevin A. Campbell.

Schmidt assumed command of H&HS June 9, 2014, and will remain at MCAS Iwakuni for approximately 10 months as the airfield station operations officer.

“Just being around the Marines and watching them work has always motivated me,” said Schmidt. “It’s also been inspirational to be around our Japanese counterparts, learn their culture and work with them, whether it’s during a Friendship Day event or something small-scale, I think I’ll remember those instances the most.”

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Darnell T. Richardson, H&HS sergeant major, said his time working with Schmidt was inspiring and enjoyable every day.

“His contributions to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron overall is his personality. When you get a leader that has the positive personality he has your Marines and sailors are going to work harder for you and that’s what changed the entire squadron.” said Richardson.

Campbell is assuming command of H&HS after serving as the future operations officer for 2nd Marine Regiment at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and as Marine aviation training systems site officer in charge for 3rd Marine Air Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, where his duties included being a chief standardization evaluator and F/A-18 tactics instructor.

“He’s a very talented officer, distinguished F/A-18 pilot, and a weapons tactics instructor,” said Schmidt. “He is a smart guy with very good credentials, and he is going to be a phenomenal fit here at Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.”

Campbell expressed his thoughts about the Marines and sailors within the squadron and what he hopes to accomplish during his time as their commanding officer.

“Everyone here is really selfless; they take care of one another. They are doing great things, and I’m excited to be here,” said Campbell. “Once I get myself established here, I plan on following in Lt. Col. Schmidt’s footsteps, but I think the sky’s the limit as to what can be accomplished here.”
