CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, celebrated Private First Class Zachary Isom’s birthday with a cake that his family ordered for him through the United Services Organization at Camp Lejeune, N.C., July 1.
Isom was told that one of his corporals needed to speak with him but to his surprise was presented with a cake in front of several members of his unit.
“I wasn’t expecting this at all,” said Isom. “This is my first birthday away from home and it’s nice to know that my family still found a way to help me celebrate.”
Isom’s family contacted the USO and informed them about their son’s first birthday away from home. The USO then contacted Isom’s unit and coordinated the surprise.
“Delivering a cake on a service member’s birthday is just one of the things we can do,” said Marisa Reeder, the assistant director for Jacksonville’s USO branch. “We also set up care packages for members overseas, and we have monthly diners for enlisted members as well as several other programs to help service members stay connected with their families.”
Once the candles were lit, everyone at the occasion sang happy birthday to the new 19-year-old and enjoyed some cake.
For more information on how to coordinate events or packages for service members please contact the local USO branch for assistance.
