ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Army may be downsizing, but that doesn’t change the importance and dedication of its leaders, even when that leader is taking command of a deactivating unit.
The 85th Support Command’s 2nd Mobilization Support Group, headquartered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, held a change of command ceremony in Arlington Heights, Illinois, where Col. Walter C. Catlett relinquished command to Lt. Col. Promotable Gary D. Curry, July 9, 2016.
Brig. Gen. Frederick R. Maiocco Jr., Commanding General, 85th Support Command, presided over the ceremony.
Maiocco shared that the 2nd MSG, under the command of Catlett, has performed exceedingly well supporting mobilizations across the country, while also deactivating their additional units.
“No matter the charge, no matter the task, no matter how difficult it is, Colonel Catlett has risen to the occasion,” said Maiocco. “Improving readiness, responding to the mission, no matter what it is, he’s done an incredible job.”
Catlett, whose military experience extends past the Army and into the Marine Corps., was pleased with Curry, who has additional experience in the Air Force, taking command of 2nd MSG.
“You always worry about your command and who you’re handing it off to,” said Catlett, “And I don’t have to worry about that…we’re in good hands with Lieutenant Colonel Curry.”
Curry will command the 2nd MSG throughout the deactivation of all of its units and the handing over of the 2nd MSG mission to the Regional Support Groups.
In continuing the focus on readiness, Curry will also oversee locating new duty assignments for his unit’s soldiers that want to continue serving, and ensure soldiers are being placed where their knowledge and skills will be most useful. The effort is for his drilling soldiers and those currently mobilized.
The ceremony concluded with Curry giving brief remarks and then swiftly cut a ceremonial cake, giving flight to the 2nd MSG colors with their new commander and providing some frosting to the floor.
