NOVO SELO TRAINING AREA, Bulgaria (July 12, 2016)- For U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Trenton Snody, being a logistics officer during a multi-national exercise that involves eight countries, tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and hundreds of troops is quite the logistical undertaking.
From someone on the ground, who is directly involved in the planning and execution of a large-scale, live-fire exercise, here are three things to know about Platinum Lion 16-4:
1. Planning and execution is a beast
“Planning for an exercise of this scale is, without a doubt, a team effort. Effective communication is crucial when coordinating with foreign militaries to move personnel, equipment, and ammunition from across Europe while meeting rigid timelines.”
2. It’s an opportunity to learn from different nations
“Exercises like Platinum Lion 16-4 offer a great opportunity for U. S. Marines to work with our partner nations in order to establish relationships and learn the capabilities that the different partner nations can bring to the fight.”
3. Prepares us for future battles, together
“The knowledge gained through Platinum Lion will be instrumental in laying the foundation necessary for U. S. Marines to work effectively with foreign forces in any future conflict that may arise.”
Platinum Lion is an annually-scheduled exercise aimed to increase proficiency and knowledge among multiple nations as well as strengthen the regional defense of Easter Europe.
