    3d Medical Command Deployment Support

As a part of the second day kick-off for Healthy Cortland's Innovative Readiness Training (IRT), Genevieve Suits, mayor for the Village of Homer, N.Y., toured the facility where military service members provide medical, dental, optometry and veterinary services at no-cost to members of the community held at Homer Intermediate Junior High School, July 16, 2016.

Healthy Cortland is one of the IRT events that provides real-world training in a joint civil-military environment while delivering world-class medical care to the people of Cortland, N.Y., from July 15-24.

Mayor Suits along with two triage nurses from the IRT, Army Reserve Captain Lucas Marcum from the 48th Combat Support Hospital and Navy Reserve Lt. Cmdr. Cathleen Bruni from the Expeditionary Medical Facility Bethesda, attended the Holiday in Homer festival held downtown. Both Marcum and Bruni handed out brochures and shared about the ten-day event with community members.

There are no income requirements. Whether a community member has health insurance, or is under-insured, or uninsured, all services are provided at no cost. First come, first served, no identification required.

Some of the services provided at no-cost include: dental examinations, cleanings, fillings, simple extractions, medical screenings for diabetes, blood pressure, depression, fall risk assessments, nutritional counseling, physical therapy, vision examinations, single-focal prescription glasses manufactured on-site and ready for pick-up within 24-hours. Spay, neuter and rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs are also available.

Walk-ins for all services are highly welcomed and encouraged. Prior to the event's kick-off, community members were previously encouraged to call 211 or the Cortland County SPCA to schedule appointments.

The Southern Tier East Regional Planning Development Board, Seven Valleys Health Coalition, and Cortland County were responsible for bringing the event to the Cortland area. Many other supporting organizations and agencies within the community were instrumental in providing resources for the event.

Participating in the Healthy Cortland event are service members from the Army Reserve, Air Force National Guard, active duty Navy, and Navy Reserve, many of whom traveled as far as from California, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland.

Service members supporting the Healthy Cortland event are well-trained and many work as medical personnel in the civilian sector.

Whether abroad or supporting American citizens on the home-front, IRTs help to strengthen the bond between the community and the military.
