YAVORIV, Ukraine - Soldiers of 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division officially began their rotational assignment in Ukraine after a transfer of authority ceremony from 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 2IBCT, 3ID here July 16.
The Mustangs will be responsible for training Ukrainian ground forces as part of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. The training is designed to reinforce defensive skills of the Ukrainian Ground Forces in order to increase their capacity for self-defense.
The event started with appreciation for the outgoing unit’s accomplishment here for the past six months.
“I personally thank all the 3-15 IN Soldiers for their efforts and positive attitude throughout this deployment,” said Lt. Col. Karstan Jack, chief of staff of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. “I wish you all the best of luck on future missions.”
The Mustangs were welcomed and encouraged to give the best training to the Ukrainian battalions that come through the International Peacekeeping and Security Center on a 55-day training rotation. Jack also emphasized the importance of their complete commitment to the mission.
“Lt. Col. Wisham we welcome 6-8 to this fight and look forward to the Cav spirit which it brings to this multinational effort,” said Jack. “I ask that you take pride in the training you conduct and always be a hundred percent. The training you provide Ukrainian Soldiers will save lives.”
The main focus for mustangs as they partner with Canadian, Lithuanian and Polish forces is to stay professional and provide every necessary assistance to make sure the Ukrainians are well trained and prepared.
“We are very focused as professional Soldiers in helping another professional get better and ready,” said Lt. Col. Robert Wisham, commander of 6-8 Cav. “We want to provide them with the highest quality of training to prepare them for mission readiness, that will increase their capability and survivability in a potential near term rotation to a conflict zone.”
In addition, Wisham said it is a huge motivation for 6-8 Cav Soldiers knowing that they can directly impact somebody’s capabilities before they go into combat, and it is a massive motivator for his guys as they take charge of the mission.
Soldiers expressed how they felt about the deployment and how mission
accomplishment is their main goal during this rotation. They also talked about showing pride in their country with the way they conduct themselves by always maintaining military customs and courtesies.
“I feel good about being here in Ukraine,” said Sgt. Andrew Worcester, a combat medic with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 6-8 Cav. “I look forward to supporting and helping Soldiers complete the training. Soldiers have to conduct themselves as professionals, show pride in what they represent, and always carry themselves in a respectful way as they are a representation of their country.”
