The Malmstrom Commissary participated in the Feds Feed Families campaign June 1 to Aug. 31.
Feds Feed Families is a nationwide campaign hosted by the United States Department of Agriculture and is designed to supplement the country’s need for donated foods and basic health items during the summer months.
“Last year, Malmstrom donated approximately 1,058 pounds of food to the local food bank,” said Loriann McDonald, assistant commissary officer. “Our goal for this year is 2,000 pounds.”
The Malmstrom Commissary has been participating in the program since 2010.
The donated pounds of items will be given to local food banks and services.
“Feds Feed Families is a huge food drive that is federally supported,” said Senior Master Sgt. Toni Wiser, 341st Contracting Squadron first sergeant.
Wiser has been involved with the campaign in the past and says it is an opportunity for Airmen to give back to the local community.
“Each base supports their local community in a big way by bringing awareness,” said Wiser. “Our community supports the base in so many aspects and it’s important that we don’t take that for granted. (The community) helps to host our base activities and support our Airmen.”
The commissary made bags of pre-selected basic toiletries and non-perishable food items available for customers to purchase at checkout.
After purchase, the bags of items are donated on the spot by commissary personnel.
According to McDonald, this process helped make the charitable donation more accessible and easy for busy shoppers.
“Some of the food products included are things like peanut butter,” said McDonald. “With items like (peanut butter), families can make sandwiches. There are many families in need in the downtown area. Some of those who are eligible to receive food are struggling military members or veterans.”
According to www.usda.gov, millions of Americans live in households that struggle to put food on the table.
“We in the military are blessed to have a paycheck,” said Wiser. “I think that if there is any way that we can give back to those who are struggling in our community then we should take that opportunity to help those in need.
This year the donated items will be distributed by the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store located in downtown Great Falls, Montana.
