Soldiers from local Army Reserve commands were given the opportunity to participate in the Tough Mudder after volunteering at the event the day before. Although running through dangling wires charged with 10,000 volts and leaping from a 12-foot platform into a pool of mud may not seem appealing to some, these Soldiers could not resist the challenge.

Spc. Kimberly Anderson, assigned to the 847th Human Resource Company, Fort Snelling, Minnesota, said the event combines two things she values - community engagement and physical fitness.

When asked by her sergeant, Anderson eagerly agreed to work as a volunteer, and she showed the same eagerness when given the chance to compete for an Army Reserve team the following day.

Anderson attributed much of her energy to the interaction she has had with the community.

“I had so many people come up and thank me for my service - at least 500,” explained Anderson. “It was awesome!”

This year’s Twin Cities event hosted approximately 4,000 participants. Gregory James, warm up motivator, said out of the five Tough Mudders he has worked, this is the first time he has witnessed the partnership with the Army Reserve. He was impressed by the sheer enthusiasm of the Reserve team members.

“They bring so much energy to the crowd,” exclaimed James. “They add so much to the community Tough Mudder has already created.”

The event revolves around teamwork and camaraderie - values shared by the Army Reserve.

“Tough Mudder and the Army definitely line up with their value system,” said James. “Teamwork, not leaving anyone behind, and playing off each other’s strengths are all reinforced by having the Soldiers out here.”

Anderson agreed that the traits instilled in her by the Army Reserve have set her up for success.

“The Army focuses on teamwork and I think that’s what we’re going to need,” said Anderson, looking forward to the upcoming race. “We’re going out there as a group and plan to all stay together, as a team, to help each other out.”

Just as dedication, perseverance and collaboration are needed to complete this grueling course, Anderson feels that it is equally important that the Army Reserve and the American people apply the same effort.

“It’s important to be involved with activities like this because it shows the community that we are here, and we care,” explained Anderson. “We’re out here supporting them to show that we need their support as well.”

The Soldiers’ participation in the 2016 Twin Cities Tough Mudder shows that no matter the size of the obstacle (or obstacle course), these Army Reserve Soldiers are ready.
