HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – Several campers from the Savannah area Jewish Educational Alliance visited Hunter Army Airfield to see what it is like to be a Soldier in the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade do on a daily basis July 19.
The campers ranged in age from 10 to 14 years old.
Kristina Martell, assistant camp director for the JEA camp Savannah summer program said it means a lot being able to get the kids to see what goes on at their local military base.
“It’s good for these guys because they are leaders in training and they’re middle schoolers so it’s good for them to see the many different leadership roles in the military,” Martell said.
The tour focused on leadership, so it was only right that the command team of the 603rd Aviation Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Daryl S. von Hagel and Command Sgt. Maj. Jason O. Johnson were there to talk to the campers.
“The message I communicated to the group was lead by example, take care of yourself and take care of the people that you lead, treat people with dignity and respect, give each of the people you lead a purpose and a reason why they are doing the task that you gave them,” von Hagel said. “I also told them to have fun and play with some Army equipment.”
The campers experienced static displays of all the airframes the brigade utilizes. The campers clearly enjoyed themselves in and around the aircraft.
Additionally, there was a MK-19 grenade launcher to view along with a .50-caliber M2 machine gun that the campers thoroughly enjoyed. They also took turns carrying each other around on a stretcher.
Capt. Nicholas Orndorff, Headquarters Support Company, 603rd ASB said it was his goal to show the campers the many different forms of leadership in the aviation branch of the Army.
“It’s awesome to be able to show these young future leaders how we do stuff in the Army,” Orndorff said. “It gives them a chance to see how they can develop their own leadership style.”
One of the campers, Rachel Reineri is just getting ready to enter the eighth grade. The 13-year-old was impressed with her experience.
“They really helped explain to me what real leadership is,” Reineri said. “I like learning what their interpretation of leadership is. It’s kind of cool to see everyone’s different views on it.”
