FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Paratroopers assigned to Battery A, 1st Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, along with U.S. Air Force personnel and simulated coalition forces, took to the streets here in search of an 'insurgent cell' during a training exercise, June 12.
For many of the Paratroopers new to the unit, the training had the feel of a real world event.
"I have not been deployed yet, but this is as real a mission as I have seen," said Pfc. Brent Jackson, a native of St. Louis and medic with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. "This is really something."
In the scenario, the cell, is responsible for improvised explosive device attacks against coalition forces. The battery was tasked with locating the cell and destroying it. The training area replicates two city blocks.
Paratroopers carefully and aggressively cleared each building. Throughout the operation, battery leaders worked with the local towns people to gain information on the enemy.
Within two hours, the Paratroopers seized a small weapons cache and the insurgent cell. Both were discovered within the same neighborhood block. The realism of the exercise prepared Paratroopers for combat operations.
"This truly is a realistic look of how it is in theater," said Sgt. Russell Klemm, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "Clearing buildings and looking for high-value targets is what we do."
